Hello clients, friends, supporters, and fellow do-gooders.
It's safe to say that this year was not what anyone had anticipated. We hope that you find the time for some much-needed rest and recovery during this festive season and that 2021 presents you with clarity and opportunity.
We are reminded daily of how our people and planet are hurting and need healing. COVID has dramatically shown us how the vulnerability of society and the terrible pain and suffering experienced could be met with a tremendous force of compassion. 1000’s of feeding schemes and community care networks were created overnight - just as businesses closed down and millions of people experienced the loss of income. The increase of triggering conversations, harsh realisations about #Blacklivesmatter, #GBV (Gender-Based Violence), and loss of revenue have not only shaken the nation but the world.
This has challenged us at The Good Machine in more ways than we could have imagined - and yes when we refer to 'us' we include every client, partner, and friend.
The endeavours this year were taken on in a huge collaborative manner, with blurred lines at times but the focus was on survival and standing together. It has become clear that no mission can be done in isolation, and whatever we think we know, we need to be open to reassessing.
This leaves us acknowledging the year that is closing behind us and highlighting our learnings - key partnerships, resources shared, and focused on being authentic, inclusive, innovative, and hyper-dynamic. Dreaming of a better world.
We are proud to announce that The Good Machine is aiding the cool crew at Sealand in the building of their Social Impact Foundation. This goes hand in hand supporting their certification as a B Corporation, making all decisions based on sustainability and responsibility, and using business as a force for good.
Rooted in Cape Town’s southern peninsula, Sealand Gear, a sustainable lifestyle brand, works hard to make sure that every business decision is made ethically, keeping the environment front and centre alongside inspired functional designs and longevity. Gita Amber Carroll, the Founder of The Good Machine, was announced as one of their brand ambassador lifestyle crew members this year.
As one of our partners, we opened our doors to the Red & Yellow MAC (Marketing, Advertising, and Communication) students - where they used The Good Machine as one of their key assignments for the year! The interest in for-good business and communications was palpable from the young masterminds. These young people are the future of our workforce. The more informed they are on how social impact can be included in daily business, the better chance we have in positively influencing critical decisions that will affect humankind in the future. A special shout out to Di Charton for her phenomenal energy and inspirational outlook and the amazing interns: Zuks, Emma, Sabrina, Sophie, and Kelsey!
See our Instagram page to meet these five interns during their #interntakeover!
We are beyond STOKED to be the first associate of award-winning Waves For Change's new venture focussing on Programme Design and Data Tracking of impact organisations! 🤟🏽
They are now our formal Programme Development Partner, with two great programme designs under the belt: (VUSA and the Pedal Project) - we are excited to see what 2021 holds!

United Through Sport
Together with Project Unity, United Through Sport has done an immense job at helping throughout the pandemic. Through their partnership with Project Unity, United through Sports has managed to distribute thousands of food parcels within the Nelson Mandela Bay area, supporting the city's most vulnerable children and families. Workbooks were also distributed to educate children and to keep them busy during the worst of lockdown. This has all been done through schools, churches, community organisations as well as the municipality and government agencies. ⚽️
MathMoms
Another one of our fantastic clients, continued to help children throughout the pandemic this year. This organisation has the purpose of creating a safe space where children are able to come and learn maths and leave having learned so much more, all thanks to a special group of mothers, retired teachers, educators, and friends. During the lockdown, MathMoms came up with five responses to the pandemic:
Nurturing community
Continued learning
Food security
Creating routine
Exercising

Peace Park Foundation (PPF) has done a tremendous job of pivoting and servicing its communities during this time of COVID. By combining their resources together with donor funding, they were able to distribute more than 50 000 items including soaps, masks, wash stations, oxygen regulators, isolation gowns, and more, to several vulnerable communities. But this wasn't enough. PPF has since also implemented programs that offer assistance to communities to assist in easing the effect of job-related casualties. 🐘 🍃
* As The Good Machine, we focus on their corporate innovation and next-generation strategy and are so looking forward to what 2021 will bring. "If we can conquer boundaries to re-establish, renew and preserve large functional ecosystems, we can ensure that there is a place for humans and a place for animals to co-exist on Earth – safely and sustainably" - Werner Myburgh, Peace Parks Foundation CEO
ENDUROCAD Elana Meyer, Endurocad’s ambassador and founder, and Olympic medalist was awarded the Sri Chinmoy Peace Torch for the Sanlam Cape Town Virtual Marathon peace run. This prestigious award honours Elana's unparalleled sporting achievements and her achievements as a role model to so many. Endurocad is an inspiring initiative helping SA athletes make a living from their talent and helping them build a brand and business for life after sport. The Good Machine ran the Cape Town Virtual Marathon in support of Endurocad and raised R20 000 for the empowerment of young women athletes during this covid pandemic. The money went towards providing food and essential needs for their young women athletes.
Purpose Lead Mentorship is a key focus on our work and we are proud to have assisted super talented athletes Charl du Toit (para Olympic medalist) and Nolene Conrad (2021 Olympic contender) on their personal and professional development journeys.
We were fortunate to see the happiness beaming off 50 VUSA children at the Two Oceans Education Foundation recently. Many of these children had never been to or seen an aquarium before, let alone the incredible ocean species on display. 🐠 * VUSA is a key Good Machine client where we support them in their organisational development, governance and sustainability.

Emotional support is a critical component of the work we do at The Good Machine. With our client work we often focus on the trauma that children and communities face but this year we were also very aware of supporting staff within the organisations we work with. We would like to thank psychologist Prof James Nel for his ongoing support to us and our clients - where he assesses the personality and cognitive abilities of organisation members to ensure that the team is working to its maximum potential;
We are so excited to be working with the Beach Co-Op in 2021 in educating and creating awareness on ocean issues! This NPO has the mission of eliminating, reusing, redesigning, and recycling single-use plastic that so often ends up in our oceans and on our beaches.
What does 2021 hold? We have been working on an NPO glossary and tool document and are eager to send this out next year! Our belief in collaboration and the sharing of knowledge within the NPO industry is so important to us and is one of the reasons why we are so excited to release this free resource. Business and Purpose Retreat in Cape Town and Corsica! This is something that has come to meet us and we are rising to meet the challenge! These will be all woman’s retreats focussing on direction and purpose in career and personal life. We are excited to be partnering with our friend and power yogi Monique Wools-King for the Cape Town Retreat in March! (Info coming soon ... watch this space!). 🧘🏼♀️ For more info on the Corsica retreat: Destination Namaste 🙏🏽 And last but not least, we are welcoming two phenomenal Kindness Curators: Emma Turner & Sophie Fisher who will be our interns in 2021 assisting us in providing the best service to our clients. Go and check out The Good Machine in the News on our website to keep up to date with what we're up to.
With all the above mentioned, we hope and trust that the progress that has been made since the launch of The Good Machine is as inspiring to you as it is to us. We are deeply grateful for our clients and partners who have played such vital and active roles throughout this tough year.
From all of us at The Good Machine, we wish you and your family a wonderful festive season!
